Earth Day
Why we do it
For 50 years, Friends of the Parks (FOTP) has brought Chicagoans together to care for and connect with their local parks. Our parks are vital community spaces, but they require ongoing care and stewardship.
Every year, in partnership with the Chicago Park District, we organize one of the city’s largest volunteer events. This initiative brings thousands of people together to restore green spaces and strengthen community ties.
What is Earth Day Cleanup?
The Earth Day Cleanup is a citywide volunteer event that takes place each April. In 2025, more than 150 parks across Chicago were cleaned and revitalized by thousands of volunteers.
From picking up litter, fixing playgrounds, and spreading mulch to connecting with neighbors and local organizations, the day is all about taking action for our local parks.

How will FOTP Support Your Cleanup?
FOTP coordinates all the behind-the-scenes work to ensure a successful Earth Day Cleanup across the city. Here's how the process works:
We provide the materials you need for a safe and effective cleanup, including gloves, garbage bags, mulch, and wood chips where needed.
We organize and support Site Captains, who serve as the local leaders at each park.
We manage the volunteer sign-up process, making it easy for individuals and groups to join a cleanup site near them.
We help allocate group volunteers to parks that need extra hands, ensuring that all participating parks receive strong community support.
