Earth Week 2007
The Friends of the Parks’ Nature Along the Lake program brought 272 Chicago Public School elementary students to the lakefront for Earth Day 2007. Thanks to additional funding for the South side Nature Along the Lake initiative, 36 students from Woods Academy and Carver Primary visited the South Shore Cultural Center for Earth Day. Moreover, the North side program at Montrose Point expanded from last year’s 85 students from 2 schools, to 236 students from 3 schools. At Montrose Point, three 5th grade classes from Disney Magnet and a 4th and 6th grade class from McCutcheon School visited the lake on April 23rd. 151 students participated in Earth Day stations including: yoga, beach exploration, planting wildflowers, mulching trees and birding with the Chicago Audubon. The Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club provided the indoor facility and lunch for the students. Additionally, on April 24th, two 2nd and two 3rd grade classes from Stewart School participated in a second Earth Day at Montrose Point. 85 students planted wildflower seeds to take home, adopted trees, hiked in the Magic Hedge and competed in a beach scavenger hunt, collecting shells, crayfish claws, bones and more. |
