Chicagoans have the unique opportunity to enjoy the natural land in the Cook County Forest Preserves. The founders created these hidden wonders for nearby recreation, relaxation and spiritual renewal for urban communities. In past decades, the public flocked to these preserves via street cars each weekend. As automobiles gained popularity, public transit to these preserves slowly disappeared. Today most city residents do not know where these 68,000 acres of preserves are located, how to get to them nor what there is to do once they get there. This brochure highlights 10 preserves accessible by public transportation, helping to make it easy for all to enjoy nature even without a car.
