She has been a member of the FOTP Board for over 30 years and has a deep and lasting commitment to protecting and enhancing the city’s green spaces. Lauren is a former FOTP board chair and currently chairs the Development Committee. Lauren is also actively involved in her community as the treasurer of Midway Park Advisory Council and a member of the Jackson Park Advisory Council. COMMUNITY AWARD
The Environmental Law & Policy Center (ELPC)
ELPC is the Midwest’s leading environmental legal advocacy and eco-business innovation organization. ELPC protects the Great Lakes and fights for safe, clean water and healthy clean air for all. ELPC combines effective public interest litigation with strategic policy advocacy, sound science, and economic analysis. ELPC produces strong results for the environment in the courtrooms, boardrooms, and legislative hearing rooms across the pivotal Midwest states and in Washington D.C. ELPC public interest attorneys filed a federal court lawsuit on behalf of Friends of the Parks and the Alliance of the Southeast to stop the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ proposed new toxic dredged wastes landfill along the Lake Michigan shoreline in the Southeast Side environmental justice community that has long been overburdened by toxics pollution. The Illinois EPA denied or refused to approve three required state water quality permits. Combined with the lawsuit, that forced the Army Corps to withdraw its environmental impact statement and proposed toxics landfill. The next steps are cleaning up the site and planning for a new lakefront park.
Alliance of the Southeast (ASE) is a multicultural, interfaith coalition of churches, schools, businesses, and community organizations working together to address the challenges facing Southeast Chicago neighborhoods. ASE builds the capacity of leaders, organizers, and associations that carry out community and social change, envisioning a powerful grassroots base that influences decision-makers and wins real improvements in local neighborhoods. Through grassroots leadership and collaboration, ASE empowers residents to build stronger, healthier, and more equitable communities. ASE was co-plaintiff along with FOTP in the lawsuit to stop the expansion of a confined disposal facility (CDF), which is now being transformed into Park #608, fulfilling a decades-old promise for the Southeast Side.
